This calendar is a novel type intended for simultaneous short-term, detailed planning and long-term, goal-oriented planning. Instead of showing just a single month at a time, Iterative Calendar lets the user see an entire year at a time. Only during the current month are individual days delineated. As time digresses from the current month, the days start merging together visually. This allows for planning that is not tied to a specific date and time, but is more about personal goals and important periods of time in one’s life.
At the end of each month, the current pages are torn off and the individual boxes shift down, delineating the new month. The previous months begins to congeal and the following month begins to disintegrate. This image shows four successive months from the first set.
Carbon paper beneath each page ensures that plans are retained after the page is ripped off. It also makes the piece a living record; older thoughts will fade away over time while newer ones appear more clearly.
The next step for this project is digitization. There are many advantages to a physical version; for one, the calendar’s size allows the user to draw in close or take a step back, echoing its dual-nature. But in today’s world, such interactivity begs for a more portable digital companion.
